There are 16 Spokane Wineries that are worth your time checking out if you are at all interested in wine. You heard right, there some great wineries in Spokane. I have to admit it, when I think of Spokane I don't associate wine or wineries with my town. But, that's all changing.
I grew up in the town of Sebastopol which is located in Sonoma County, California. I mention this because Sonoma Co. is probably one of the best wine growing regions in the US. My Dad owned a couple of apple orchards there in the late 60's and we farmed them more as a hobby than anything else. Growing wine grapes hadn't caught on yet and the region was more known for apples and plums at the time.
It didn't take long before Sonoma Co became known as "the wine country". I was just starting to develop an appreciation for wine about the time I moved to Spokane in 1981. I am no wine expert by any means but I do love good wine and the passion and energy that you experience when you talk to winery owners and other wine lovers.
For this reason I am really jazzed about the fact that Washington State Wineries are producing some great wines and Spokane wineries are right in the middle of it. In the past 20 years or so the quantity and the quality of the wines produced in and around Spokane has improved tremendously.

Raising a glass at Townshend Winery
In addition to the wineries around Spokane there are also about 160 wineries within a 50 mile radius of the tri cities area. Most of the grapes used by the wineries here in Spokane come from the Columbia valley region.
There is also a winery that is starting to produce an Italian Barbera in Green Bluff to the north of Spokane. They plan to have their tasting room open by November of 2009.
Most of the tasting rooms are open on the week ends and First Fridays and most offer free wine tasting and most also have a selection of wine gifts. I would be remiss to not also include the official Spokane Winery brochure put together by the Spokane Winery Association.
