There are seven Spokane Colleges and Universities in and around the Spokane area in addition to Spokane career and technical schools. For a town the size of Spokane there is a lot to choose from in the area of higher education.
If you are visiting Spokane with teenaged children who are or will be thinking of college in the near future, think about scheduling some time to take a tour. The tours only take about an hour and are a great way to get to know what the campuses is like before senior year.
Gonzaga University
Gonzaga is one of the most well known of Spokane colleges. It is a private Jesuit college located near the Spokane River about
half a mile from downtown Spokane. They offer liberal arts programs as well as
business, education, engineering, dentistry, theology, law, medicine, nursing
and veterinary medicine. Gonzaga is probably best known for their men's
basketball program which has made it to the NCAA Division I Tournament 9 out of
the last 10 years.
Whitworth University
A private Christian liberal arts college that was founded in 1883. It was
originally located in Sumner, Washington and was named the Sumner Academy.
It's name was changed to Whitworth College in 1890 and was moved to Tacoma,
Washington in 1899. It was finally moved to Spokane in 1914 where it has been
located ever since. In 2006 the trustees voted to change the name to Whitworth
University and this name became official in July 1, 2007.
Spokane Community College
SCC is the oldest community college in Spokane and is part of the Community
Colleges of Spokane district. SCC is located in Northeast Spokane near the
Spokane River between Spokane and Spokane Valley. This college offers 2 year
Associate degrees and certificate programs in liberal arts, career development,
and workforce training. Many graduates transfer into 4-year schools to continue
their education.
Spokane Falls Community College
SFCC is the Liberal Arts campus of the Community Colleges of Spokane. They offer
Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees which enables students to
transfer to 4 year colleges. SFCC teams up with SCC for it's athletics program
and offers mens and womens sports teams that compete in the Northwest Athletic
Association of Community Colleges.
Moody Bible Institute
A branch campus of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL. They offer
Bachelor of Science degrees in Biblical Studies, Bachelor of Science in Mission
Aviation Technology, Associate of Biblical Studies, and a Certificate of
Biblical Studies. I've known several graduates of the Mission Aviation program
that are working in the mission field helping to spread God's word.
Eastern Washington University
A state university located in Cheney, Washington with a branch campus in
Spokane. Eastern offers courses in more than 100 fields of study and is one of
the fastest growing public universities in the state. One notable alumni, ESPN
radio personality Colin Cowherd, calls EWU "The Harvard of the Palouse". I don't
if I would go that far but Eastern is a great school.
Washington State University Spokane
A branch campus of WSU located in the Riverpoint Campus in Spokane's University
District. Advanced studies in the health sciences and health professions are
offered.
