There are some exceptional Spokane restaurants, so no matter what type of cuisine you’re in the mood for you'll find one to tickle your taste buds.

In the past 4-5 years there has been a steady improvement in the number of quality restaurants in Spokane. I hope to help continue this trend by highlighting some of these exceptional restaurants in Essential-Spokane-Guide.

I have a theory that because of the popularity of media outlets like the Food Network people are much more likely to break out the Le Creuset and their Barefoot Contessa cookbook than in the past.

Just walk through a bookstore these days and you see cookbooks from a long list of celebrity chefs like Giada Delarentis and Rachel Ray. Gourmet food has become much more main stream. Spokane even has it's own Williams Sonoma for heavens sake! My wife recently subscribed to a culinary magazine for the first time to get ideas to create her own gourmet masterpieces.

We also have a couple of friends in Spokane who's sons recently graduated from prestigious culinary arts schools. One of them has returned and has worked in several local Spokane restaurants while the other is working in New York for Mario Batali. Both of them are thinking of starting their own restaurants in Spokane in the near future.

Along with the popularity of gourmet food it follows that the appreciation of good wine is also on the rise. Spokane has over 16 wineries in the the area now. Most of them have tasting rooms and wine tours that you can take advantage of. There are also organized wine tasting tours that you can book that tour the area cellars. Vineyards are starting to pop up around Spokane where before there were only wheat fields.

I have some friends that belong to wine clubs and often give wine gifts to their friends. I don't subscribe to Wine Spectator yet but I have always enjoyed a good bottle of Cabernet. It makes me happy that Spokane is now becoming a source of some great wines.

As I have been writing about these local restaurants the thing that stands out to me is the energy, passion and creativity that the owners have for what they are doing. This EP&C is what comes across in the dishes they create and the service they provide. This is what keeps us coming back for more.

You won’t find any franchise restaurants in our list because we want to promote the local Spokane restaurants that display ample quantities of EP&C. Our list is by no mean exhaustive as we only want to talk about the establishments that we are well acquainted with.
